It's rare that I encounter a story as good as this or an author as fine as Cat. If I am lucky I might find such a great tale once every few years. Cat not only uses proper English I cannot finish books or articles written in bad English , she weaves the story lines so well I found it impossible to sleep. I just needed to know what would happen next. How would her characters feel about or react to an incident? How would their interactions change each other?

What's nicer, this book did not depend on the technology or mutations. These were incidental background that was easy to imagine as probable from today's technologies and people, not some impossible tech or change.

Plus the characters were not only believable, I felt as if I knew many of them personally. Kimbriel's Nuala books are a wonder. She crafts elegant and intriguing worlds and peoples them with fully realized humans and not-quite human beings.

I love that her characters wrestle with the consequences of technology. In Fires of Nuala, the main protagonist's life spans decades as she uses frozen sleep to travel the galaxy. Quick-witted, sharp, and kind, Darame finds herself a part of a trader's scheme to cheat the crooks gone awry. She puts her professional con skills to good use as she avoids being a casualty of a royal coup. It is impossible not to love Darame and the people she encounters, and equally impossible to not lose your heart to the planet of Nuala. Fires of Nuala is one of my favorite rereads.

The world of Nuala seems so real. The characters are wonderfully delineated, even those who have very short appearances. As my paperback has long since separated from its binding and is now reread by handfuls, I was thrilled to see e-book reissue. I just wish that it would be reprinted in physical form as well.

Then I'd have one for the home shelf and one for my traveling Kindle. I look forward to reading the next in the series. This is one if the first science fiction books I read growing up. Alexis Huxley and Isaac Asimov had already made me think. Ray Bradbury already disturbed me. But this book made me FEEL. I LOVE the characters in this story and it is a truly original setting and world with its own set of rules, challenges and beauty. Great book to read. I had the paperback and read it so much it fell apart. A sci fi wonder.

Kimbriel has created a coherent and detailed world, with strong, clear characters that does the best of what sci fi should: Kimbriel's clarity of style lets you know you are experiencing a brilliant mind, even while lost in the story that will not let you stop turning pages until you wholly forget you are turning pages at all. The Fires of Nuala is a triumph that leads one naturally to Kimbriel's other works and the opportunity to find a writer and world you can depend on in ways that will both transport and transform you.
